Justin Hayward

Wednesday, October 22, 2014 | 8pm

A guitarist of great skill and a unique sound, Justin Hayward has remained one of the few stars of the 1960s to retain a devoted international following. Born on October 14, 1946, Hayward received his first guitar at age nine and has not looked back since.

After responding to the Moody Blues’ ad announcing their search for a new lead guitarist to replace Denny Laine, Hayward received a call from Mike Pinder. A meeting between the two, and then a subsequent meeting with the band, followed and Hayward was welcomed into the Moody Blues lineup on a permanent basis.

Days of Future Passed (1967), revived the band's fortunes, not least through the success of Hayward’s song "Nights in White Satin" which established him as the romantic/mystic of the band.  Not only known for "Nights in White Satin," his "New Horizons" and "Your Wildest Dreams" have also gone on to become signature hits for the legendary artist.

Hayward's career as a solo artist began in 1977 with the release of Songwriter, which displayed a leaner and more lively, acoustically textured sound than his work with the Moody Blues. He followed this up in 1980 with the disco-influenced Night Flight. Moving Mountains (1985) was strongly reminiscent of his earlier work with the band from the start of the 1970s and his "Your Wildest Dreams" reached number nine on the U.S. charts in 1986.

On 26 February 2013 Hayward released his solo album Spirits of the Western Sky. He toured solo with this album on the east coast of the U.S. in August 2013, to much acclaim, with Moody Blues backups keyboardist Alan Hewitt, and vocalist Julie Ragins. The final show of the solo tour in Atlanta, Georgia was recorded for a live DVD project (and a live CD) Spirits Alive which was released in 2014.
