Drawing from an eclectic range of influences and powerful personal chemistry, Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano, also known as Johnnyswim, have created an infectious sound, bridging various genres including folk, blues, and pop, to name a few. The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall is proud to host the popular singer-songwriter duo on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 7:30pm.
Ramirez studied music at the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida, and Sudano is the daughter of the late disco and R&B singer, Donna Summer. The duo formed in 2005 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Their first album, 1-4 was released in 2008. After marrying in 2009, the couple relocated to Los Angeles. A second album called 5-8 appeared in 2010, which was supported by tours and residencies in New York and Los Angeles. Home, Vol. 1, the group’s third album, emphasized their country roots, arrived in 2012.
In a recent interview Sudano speaks of her late mother’s influence. "It's my mom's voice, so in my head, it's the first voice you hear," Sudano says. "You know, I did grow inside of her, so I've heard her voice my whole life. I don't remember not knowing her voice, so I'm sure I do things that sound like her. But I think it's just a very different thing than looking physically like somebody else. I'm just so used to her singing her songs — and she was a belter, you know. I remember hearing a lot of these opera songs, because she could yodel and do all of this awesome stuff that I could never do. It sets it apart in my ear for me."
Ramirez is much more to the point: "It's fully her as much as her fingerprint is unique to her — her voice is fully Amanda and fully awesome."
Johnnyswim have been featured The Tonight Show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and most recently, NPR's All Songs Considered.
