Born in 1980, Jackiem Joyner plays contemporary jazz influenced by his upbringing in the gospel church and love of contemporary R&B. First introduced to music by his father, he later played drums backing the gospel choir in his church. In his teens, after relocating with his family to Syracuse, New York, he competed in the NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, earning top honors three years in a row in the categories of Instrumental Contemporary, Composition, and Classical Music.
After moving to Los Angeles Joyner signed to trumpeter Rick Braun's ARTizen Music Group in time to release his debut album, BabySoul. The first single "Stay With Me tonight" featured guitarist Peter White and reached #17 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts.
Jackiem Joyner continues to tour internationally both on his own and as a featured musician with notable jazz pianist, Keiko Matsui from Tokyo, Japan. The Ritz Theatre is proud to host Jackiem Joyner on Saturday, August 2, 2014 for two performances at 7pm and 10pm.
