One of the most underappreciated reggae artists of his time, Beres Hammond is a reggae singer known for his romantic lovers rock and soulful voice. While his career began in the 1970s, he reached his greatest success in the 1990s.

He was born in 1955, in Annotto Bay, the Jamaican province of St. Mary and grew up listening to Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, among others. From 1972 to 1973, Hammond performed successfully in talent competitions and in 1975 joined the group Zap Pow as lead singer enjoying a hit single in 1978 with "The System."

In 1985, Hammond founded his own label, Hammond House, for the release of his album, Make a Song, which had two Jamaican chart-toppers that were influenced by the emerging dancehall style, "Groovy Little Thing" and "What One Dance Can Do" and attracted international attention for the singer. He scored another hit in 1986 with "Settling Down." He left his fame in Jamaica for New York in 1987, where he recorded the album Have a Nice Weekend and the duet single "How Can We Ease the Pain" with emerging crossover star, Maxi Priest.

His 2012 album One Love, One Life topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and in January 2014 it was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2013 he was awarded the Order of Jamaica by the Jamaican government in recognition of his "exceptional and dedicated contribution to the Jamaican music industry."
